Functional viewpoint

The functional viewpoint begins to categorize and organize the tasks and activities of the solution into corresponding functional components, and describes how data flows between them, and in the physical system. Here, we will begin to define the integration of the IT world with the OT world, with the goal of increased local collaborative autonomy and increased system optimization, through global orchestration of sensor data collection and analysis. This creates a dichotomy as IT and OT each have a different focus, and they each have far-reaching impacts. A functional domain definition attempts to address these architectural concerns. The functional architecture definition begins by identifying specific functions in the system and their specific requirements. These functions are categorized by the IIRA as follows; however, they may require some customization or additional domains may be required, depending on the use case and industry:

  • Control domain
  • Operations domain
  • Information domain
  • Application domain
  • Business domain
